IV Latin American Conference “Julio Fretes Portillo” A significant leap forward for RIADIS
With great dedication and care, RIADIS’ Board of Directors and Executive Committee have been intensely involved in the preparation of the IV Latin American Conference, that will be dedicated to the memory of Julio Fretes Portillo. The Conference will take place in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, from October 7 through 10, 2009.
Latin America is leading in number of CRPD signatures and ratifications
After the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was adopted by the UN (December 13, 2006) and open to signatures (March 30, 2007), the Latin American and Caribbean region continues heading the list with the highest number of countries that have already ratified the international treaty.
A World for All
The Pan-American Health Organization and the World Health Organization, in coordination with the CBR (community based rehabilitation) Network of the Americas and Caribbean, are preparing the second continental congress on CBR.
The Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights and RIADIS coordinate activity about CRPD implementation and monitoring
The UN Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights (OHCHR) and RIADIS are co-organizing an activity about CRPD implementation and monitoring, that will take place in Cartagena de Indias’ (Colombia) Hotel El Caribe, on October 10, 2009.
Second Conference of States Parties to the Convention On the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
The second Conference of States parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities ended with a closing formal session on September 4, 2009. The Conference of States parties was created according to CRPD article 40’s dispositions. The second Conference opened on September 2, and developed its agenda in three days in New York’s UN headquarters.
The Convention is a valuable tool for social development and the struggle against poverty
Conclusions from the informal sessionabout the global economic crisis, poverty and CRPD implementation, co-Chaired by New Zealand’s Permanent Mission at the UN, and the International Disability Alliance (IDA) represented by Catalina Devandas, RIADIS member. The event was held on September 3, 2009.

September, 2009. Preparations for the IV Latin American Conference Julio Fretes Portillo continue. RIADIS is intensely working through its Board of Directors, Organizing Committee, the logistics team, the by-laws reforms team, and others, who are developing various activities in preparation of all the activities related with the IV Latin American Conference “Julio Fretes Portillo”.
